THE MISANTHROPE (2025)

What a strange idea — another Misanthrope, and in English, no less. I’d better have a good reason… For me, it’s not the well-worn theme of human hypocrisy, but Célimène’s determination and integrity that make it worth doing.

In the back parking lot of Le Pain du Chocolat, a strip club, Alceste, the manager, picks a fight with anyone who dares to be hypocritical or complacent. And yet, he’s in love with Célimène, the club’s most beautiful and popular showgirl, who slips into a different persona every night and makes her living by pretending to be in love — much to Alceste’s disapproval.

Confronted with this mismatch, Alceste tries to mold Célimène into his ideal of a sweet and honest woman, something that doesn’t sit well with her. She eventually replies, “No, you don’t really love me as you ought.” One wonders then who is more hypocritical: Célimène, who constantly reveals herself, or Alceste, — a misanthrope, and a bit of an asshole — who ruins something beautiful.

This show is a modest tribute to all sex workers—to their strength, their defiance, and their integrity in the face of hate.
